If you want to give a single domain to everybody, how would fraud and resale be detected?
Hello and welcome to the community!
That’s a great question and we (as a community) are still ironing out the details as it’ll require a good balance between enforcing the rules and centralizing information collection.
The idea is to have some form of ‘you are a real person validation’ but the specific details are still to be set.
Good point about the resale or even further the sub-renting, like what if I buy it on my own name and give it to someone else? These are all good questions to ponder on ![]()
Good food for thoughts
This is a good question and in my mind the answer is largely a question of policy. Most domain reselling happens through registrars and is enabled by them; if we simply tell them that .self is off-limits, they should be able to enforce that and that should eliminate the bulk of it. It will be more difficult to detect resale for something like a gentleman’s agreement between two people but we can detect possible instances of that by tracking the WHOIS data to see if it changes. We may even be able to make it a policy that WHOIS data for .self subdomains is immutable and can only be changed if the domain is released and reissued which should make those types of arrangements less appealing and harder to pull off.
